Why is this cheeseburger pizza with mustard so good?

This is a great game day food option for pizza and burger lovers!

Cheeseburger pizza is loaded with burger pizza toppings like burger sauce (half mayo and ketchup), pickles, sesame seeds, burger meat and more…

More things to love about it:

    • Includes a special special sauce like In-And-Out burger or Big Mac sauce.
    • Use leftover burgers on pizza, or make freshly cooked ground beef topping.
    • You can meal prep the burger beef the day before.
    • Newer home chefs: see my step by step video for beginners (scroll to bottom of page).

Bake, grill or smoke this pizza…

How to make cheeseburger pizza on the grill or oven

Now I’ll walk you through it…

Cheeseburger Pizza Recipe With Mustard Pickles and Sesame seed crust

    Quick look at this recipe

    1. Make ground beef and onion cheeseburger pizza topping on the stove in a large skillet (can make a day ahead).
    2. Stretch dough and parbake pizza crust on a pizza stone for 5 minutes.
    3. Add cheeseburger pizza toppings.
    4. Bake until the crust is golden and garnish pizza with mustard and pickles.
Pickles and burger meat on pizza made cheeseburger style

And now for a more detailed look at this recipe…

How to cook cheeseburger meat for pizza topping (can make a day ahead)

    1. Brown ground beef burger meat. Add ground beef, diced onions, and olive oil to a large skillet set on medium heat or med – high heat. Add salt and pepper.
    2. Stir burger meat until done, for about 10 minutes, reducing temperature to medium-low as the liquid cooks out of the pan. Beef burger meat is done cooking when it’s no longer pink inside. Transfer burger pizza topping to a paper towel lined plate and set aside, or refrigerate until it’s time to make the pizza.

How to make ground beef taco style pizza (grill or oven-bake it)

    1. Rise dough for pizza, hours before baking / grilling it.
    2. Preheat oven to 475 degrees F (with pizza baking stone / pizza pan in it – or preheat it to whatever pizza stone temperature is safe for the stone you’re using). OR Preheat the grill to high, about 500 degrees F (also with pizza stone in it) and close the lid of the grill while it heats up.
    3. Prep pizza dough for parbaking. Sprinkle half the flour on a large work surface (like a cutting board) and put half the flour to the side of the board to use as needed to stretch the dough.
    4. Stretch pizza dough. (Beginners should watch this pizza dough stretching tutorial on Sip Bite Go for help with this step.)
    5. Bake or grill pizza dough crust on stone with sesame seeds. Carefully remove pizza stone from the oven/grill and prepare the crust quickly. First, brush half the olive oil on the pizza stone. Add the stretched raw pizza dough on top. Brush the rest of the olive oil on the outside inch of the pizza dough crust. Then sprinkle sesame seeds on the crust area.
    6. Make the cheeseburger pizza sauce. To a mixing bowl, add mayo and half the ketchup. Whisk to combine. Set aside.
    7. Bake pizza dough “naked” (without the rest of the toppings) for 8 minutes on the middle / top rack in the oven. OR grill cheeseburger pizza crust for 5 minutes, with the grill lid closed. When done, the bottom will be starting to set, barely browned, but more solid than raw dough. Remove pizza from oven / grill (sometimes I leave the pizza on the grill to assemble the toppings).
    8. Add cheeseburger pizza toppings to parbaked crust. Don’t add any toppings to the area with the sesame seeds on the crust. First, add dollops of cheeseburger pizza sauce on the parbaked dough and spread it around. Then top with mozzarella cheese. Add cooked ground beef burger meat on top. Then finish with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese.
    9. Bake ground beef taco pizza in the oven at 475°F for 8-12 minutes, or grill the pizza for about the same time at 500 degrees F. It’s done when the cheese is melted and starts to bubble. The pizza crust on the bottom will be golden brown.
    10. Cool and serve hamburger pizza with pickles and mustard. Transfer pizza to a cutting board and finish with pickle slices and mustard. Slice and enjoy when burger pizza is cool enough to eat.

    FAQs

Can you make this pizza on a baking sheet?

Yes, see my post on making homemade pizza in an oven with a baking pan for time and temperature details.

Where can you buy cheeseburger pizza?

It’s becoming popular to find hand tossed burger pizza at fast food delivery places like Dominos, Papa John’s, Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Hut, etc. Out at a fancy woodfired pizza place you could find cheeseburger pizza pies with smoked bacon on top. Yum.

    The Perfect Pizza Setup

Want to make restaurant style pizza at home? I’ve got you covered! Here are some of my top tips, tricks, secret ingredients and tools for a pizza night everyone will look forward to, again and again.

    1. NEVER do this… Contrary to what most people believe, when baking pizza on a sheet pan, never add toppings to raw pizza dough. Instead, follow my recipe for making homemade pizza with ready made dough, which will teach you how to par bake pizza dough first.
    2. Get help from secret ingredients…
      – This dough seasoning is the secret to real Italian-tasting homemade pizza dough.
      – Add pizza seasoning to store bought pizza sauce. This makes the pizza taste really fresh!
    3. Herbs are for after… In my weekly pizza making practice, I’ve found that fresh herbs, like basil, need to be added to pizza after the pizza is done baking (so the herbs don’t wilt).
    4. Buy fresh dough and get amazing results. Yup, fresh dough from grocery stores is one of my favorite short-cuts. Learn how to use fresh Trader Joe’s pizza dough and Whole Foods pizza dough with my tutorials.
    5. Frozen pizza can taste amazing, too!! Learn how to spruce it up with this recipe for pizza using frozen crust.
    6. Slice pizza pies like a chef with just a few swipes, using big ol’ pizza cutters.
    7. Want to grill pizza? Here are some pizza grilling tools to check out.
    8. Do you really need to cook pizza on the rack? Nope! I basically never do. Here are tools you see me using in my tutorials on cooking pizza in the oven…
      – Bake pizza on a rimmed baking pan set to get a beautiful golden brown crust.
      – Love crispy crust? Let the air flow with this dishwasher safe pizza pan.
      – Get personal – let your fam / friends top their own pies with this set of personal pizza pans.

    Instructions

How to cook cheeseburger meat for pizza topping (can make a day ahead)

    • Brown ground beef burger meat. Add ground beef, diced onions, and olive oil to a large skillet set on medium heat or med – high heat. Add salt and pepper.
    • Stir burger meat until done, for about 10 minutes, reducing temperature to medium-low as the liquid cooks out of the pan. Beef burger meat is done cooking when it’s no longer pink inside. How to make ground beef taco style pizza (grill or oven-bake it)

    • Rise dough for pizza, hours before baking / grilling it.
    • Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F (with pizza baking stone in it – or preheat it to whatever pizza stone temperature is safe for the stone you’re using). OR Preheat the grill to high, about 500 degrees F (also with pizza stone in it) and close the lid of the grill while it heats up.
    • Prep pizza dough for parbaking. Sprinkle half the flour on a large work surface (like a cutting board) and put half the flour to the side of the board to use as needed to stretch the dough.
    • Stretch pizza dough. (Beginners should watch this pizza dough stretching tutorial on Sip Bite Go for help with this step.) My way of stretching pizza dough starts with first pushing the ball of pizza dough against the floured surface to cover it all over with a light dusting of flour… Then I start pinching the outside inch of pizza dough, to outline the pizza crust and help form a circle shape. (Note: I don’t force a perfect circle, so there aren’t issues with holes appearing in the pizza dough). Then I switch between pressing the center of the dough against the cutting board, and then using the back of my knuckles to stretch the dough from underneath, pulling it outwards from the center. I always add a little extra flour as the dough stretches, so it holds a bigger circle shape and doesn’t shrink back together (and sometimes I use a rolling pin at the end to really flatten the dough evenly).
    • Bake or grill pizza dough crust on stone with sesame seeds. Carefully remove pizza stone from the oven/grill and prepare the crust quickly. (FYI for grilling, sometimes I just leave the stone in there when I do this step). First, brush half the olive oil on the pizza stone. Add the stretched raw pizza dough on top. Brush the rest of the olive oil on the outside inch of the pizza dough crust. Then sprinkle sesame seeds on the crust area.
    • Make the cheeseburger pizza sauce. To a mixing bowl, add mayo and half the ketchup. Whisk to combine. Set aside.
    • Bake pizza dough “naked” (without the rest of the toppings) for 8 minutes on the middle / top rack in the oven. OR grill cheeseburger pizza crust for 5 minutes, with the grill lid closed. When done, the bottom will be starting to set, barely browned, but more solid than raw dough. Remove pizza from oven / grill (sometimes I leave the pizza on the grill to assemble the toppings).
