How to make cheeseburger pizza on the grill or oven
Now I’ll walk you through it…
Quick look at this recipe
- Make ground beef and onion cheeseburger pizza topping on the stove in a large skillet (can make a day ahead).
- Stretch dough and parbake pizza crust on a pizza stone for 5 minutes.
- Add cheeseburger pizza toppings.
- Bake until the crust is golden and garnish pizza with mustard and pickles.
And now for a more detailed look at this recipe…
How to cook cheeseburger meat for pizza topping (can make a day ahead)
- Brown ground beef burger meat. Add ground beef, diced onions, and olive oil to a large skillet set on medium heat or med – high heat. Add salt and pepper.
- Stir burger meat until done, for about 10 minutes, reducing temperature to medium-low as the liquid cooks out of the pan. Beef burger meat is done cooking when it’s no longer pink inside. Transfer burger pizza topping to a paper towel lined plate and set aside, or refrigerate until it’s time to make the pizza.
How to make ground beef taco style pizza (grill or oven-bake it)
- Rise dough for pizza, hours before baking / grilling it.
- Preheat oven to 475 degrees F (with pizza baking stone / pizza pan in it – or preheat it to whatever pizza stone temperature is safe for the stone you’re using). OR Preheat the grill to high, about 500 degrees F (also with pizza stone in it) and close the lid of the grill while it heats up.
- Prep pizza dough for parbaking. Sprinkle half the flour on a large work surface (like a cutting board) and put half the flour to the side of the board to use as needed to stretch the dough.
- Stretch pizza dough. (Beginners should watch this pizza dough stretching tutorial on Sip Bite Go for help with this step.)
- Bake or grill pizza dough crust on stone with sesame seeds. Carefully remove pizza stone from the oven/grill and prepare the crust quickly. First, brush half the olive oil on the pizza stone. Add the stretched raw pizza dough on top. Brush the rest of the olive oil on the outside inch of the pizza dough crust. Then sprinkle sesame seeds on the crust area.
- Make the cheeseburger pizza sauce. To a mixing bowl, add mayo and half the ketchup. Whisk to combine. Set aside.
- Bake pizza dough “naked” (without the rest of the toppings) for 8 minutes on the middle / top rack in the oven. OR grill cheeseburger pizza crust for 5 minutes, with the grill lid closed. When done, the bottom will be starting to set, barely browned, but more solid than raw dough. Remove pizza from oven / grill (sometimes I leave the pizza on the grill to assemble the toppings).
- Add cheeseburger pizza toppings to parbaked crust. Don’t add any toppings to the area with the sesame seeds on the crust. First, add dollops of cheeseburger pizza sauce on the parbaked dough and spread it around. Then top with mozzarella cheese. Add cooked ground beef burger meat on top. Then finish with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese.
- Bake ground beef taco pizza in the oven at 475°F for 8-12 minutes, or grill the pizza for about the same time at 500 degrees F. It’s done when the cheese is melted and starts to bubble. The pizza crust on the bottom will be golden brown.
- Cool and serve hamburger pizza with pickles and mustard. Transfer pizza to a cutting board and finish with pickle slices and mustard. Slice and enjoy when burger pizza is cool enough to eat.

- Stretch pizza dough. (Beginners should watch this pizza dough stretching tutorial on Sip Bite Go for help with this step.) My way of stretching pizza dough starts with first pushing the ball of pizza dough against the floured surface to cover it all over with a light dusting of flour… Then I start pinching the outside inch of pizza dough, to outline the pizza crust and help form a circle shape. (Note: I don’t force a perfect circle, so there aren’t issues with holes appearing in the pizza dough). Then I switch between pressing the center of the dough against the cutting board, and then using the back of my knuckles to stretch the dough from underneath, pulling it outwards from the center. I always add a little extra flour as the dough stretches, so it holds a bigger circle shape and doesn’t shrink back together (and sometimes I use a rolling pin at the end to really flatten the dough evenly).
- Bake or grill pizza dough crust on stone with sesame seeds. Carefully remove pizza stone from the oven/grill and prepare the crust quickly. (FYI for grilling, sometimes I just leave the stone in there when I do this step).
Set aside.
