BBQ chicken pizza is definitely a favorite pizza in my house.

Ingredients for BBQ chicken pizza on Whole Foods dough

This recipe starts with a bag of Whole Foods brand pizza dough, flour, olive oil and salt.

Once the Whole Foods crust par bakes, the topping are added, including Whole Foods Brand pizza sauce, shredded pizza blend cheese (substitute mozzarella or fontina), already cooked chicken breast (this is a great pizza for leftover chicken), BBQ sauce, fresh red pepper, and basil to garnish.

Stick with these exact ingredients for Whole Foods BBQ chicken pizza or swap out similar amounts of other vegetables and proteins.

How to make BBQ chicken pizza with Whole Foods dough

By now, I could make this in my sleep. Here are the steps to making tasty BBQ chicken pizza.

How To Help Whole Foods Dough Rise

Step 1. Before you start stretching Whole Foods pizza dough, you need to let the dough rise. Spreading Whole Foods pizza dough is much easier when it is room temperature.

One of my favorite ways to let Whole Foods store-bought dough rise is to leave it in the bag and sit it on the counter for a half an hour – up to a few hours.

If you don’t have time to let it rise this long, that’s okay – but you want it to basically be bursting through the bag of dough so it’s easy to stretch.

Step 2. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Add parchment paper to a large rimmed sheet pan. Add 2 tsp of olive oil to the pan, and brush it with a pastry brush to spread the olive oil on the bottom and sides of the pan. Set aside.

stretching whole foods dough for pizza
One of my tricks to keep Whole Foods pizza dough stretched so it doesn’t shrink back up is to add a very light dusting of flour to hold the shape every time it stretches out a few more inches. So I keep adding little pinches of flour, which helps the dough retain the larger and larger shape instead of shrinking back up.

    Stretching Whole Foods pizza dough

Step 3. Stretch the dough from Whole Foods by adding 1 tbsp flour to a large cutting board. Add the raw Whole Foods pre-made dough on top of the flour, then flip to coat each side with flour. Stretch the dough by pinching the outside in a circular motion to spread it out.

Then stretch the inside of the pizza dough by pushing it against the cutting board from the center to the edges of the dough. Another method I often use is with my knuckles. To do this, put your knuckles under the half-stretched pizza dough and pull your hands outwards from the center. Use whatever methods to stretch the dough that work best.

One other tip I have is to add a light dusting to the dough as you stretch it out, which will help it keep the larger stretched out shape. If dough tears, don’t pull it so much and cover the holes. When dough has stretched to about the size of the pizza tray, transfer it to the sheet pan. If the dough will stretch further, push it to the outside of the tray.

    adding oil to pizza sheet
Usually the one bag of Whole Foods pizza dough will stretch to fit the entire pizza pan. However if you don’t let it rise ahead of time, if it doesn’t get nice and puffy, then it’s not going to stretch as easily.

How long to par bake fresh Whole Foods pizza dough

Step 4. Bake the naked pizza dough without toppings in the oven at 450 F for 7 minutes. During this time, prep toppings.

Step 5. Once the Whole Foods dough par bakes, take the pizza crust out of the oven. Preheat the oven to 500.

Brush 1 tsp olive oil around the outside of the dough to create a golden crust and sprinkle with salt.

How to add BBQ chicken toppings

Add the whole foods pizza sauce, half the shredded pizza blend cheese, sliced chicken breast, and BBQ sauce.

Final tips for BBQ chicken pizza with Whole Foods dough

    • Par baking. Always drizzle a little olive oil on the parchment paper, under the dough. Don’t forget to lightly coat the bottom of the pan and the sides of the pan.
    • Spreading the dough. If you’re having difficulty spreading the Whole Foods pizza dough across the entire baking sheet without making holes, just opt for a smaller pizza. Sometimes, due to the temperature in your kitchen, or the dough not having enough time to rise, it may be more difficult to stretch the dough. It will cook fine, even if the edges don’t touch the side of the pan.
    • Holes in the pizza dough? Patch them so the dough is the same thickness throughout.

    The Perfect Pizza Setup

Want to make restaurant style pizza at home? I’ve got you covered! Here are some of my top tips, tricks, secret ingredients and tools for a pizza night everyone will look forward to, again and again.

    1. NEVER do this… Contrary to what most people believe, when baking pizza on a sheet pan, never add toppings to raw pizza dough. Instead, follow my recipe for making homemade pizza with ready made dough, which will teach you how to par bake pizza dough first.
    2. Get help from secret ingredients…
      – This dough seasoning is the secret to real Italian-tasting homemade pizza dough.
      – Add pizza seasoning to store bought pizza sauce. This makes the pizza taste really fresh!
    3. Herbs are for after… In my weekly pizza making practice, I’ve found that fresh herbs, like basil, need to be added to pizza after the pizza is done baking (so the herbs don’t wilt).
    4. Buy fresh dough and get amazing results. Yup, fresh dough from grocery stores is one of my favorite short-cuts. Learn how to use fresh Trader Joe’s pizza dough and Whole Foods pizza dough with my tutorials.
    5. Frozen pizza can taste amazing, too!! Learn how to spruce it up with this recipe for pizza using frozen crust.
    6. Slice pizza pies like a chef with just a few swipes, using big ol’ pizza cutters.
    7. Want to grill pizza? Here are some pizza grilling tools to check out.
    8. Do you really need to cook pizza on the rack? Nope! I basically never do. Here are tools you see me using in my tutorials on cooking pizza in the oven…
      – Bake pizza on a rimmed baking pan set to get a beautiful golden brown crust.
      – Love crispy crust? Let the air flow with this dishwasher safe pizza pan.
      – Get personal – let your fam / friends top their own pies with this set of personal pizza pans.

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!
