Ingredients for this recipe
You just need a few ingredients to make bacon wrapped hotdogs…
- Hot dogs – 5 standard size hot dogs OR ~15 mini hot dogs.
- Bacon – 1 or 2 slices for standard hot dogs, ½ a slice of bacon for make this a mini hot dogs recipe with little Oscar Mayer weiners.
- Hotdog buns.
- My favorite condiments – shredded cheddar cheese + bbq sauce with medium heat. But mustard ketchup and relish are good as well!
- Optional – add a sprinkle of brown sugar to bacon before wrapping the hot dogs to add a little sweetness to this bacon wrapped hot dog recipe.
How To Make Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs
First, I’ll just quickly walk you through assembling hot dogs wrapped in bacon.
- Prepare a work space with 2-3 toothpicks per hot dog.
- Take one piece of bacon at a time and wrap bacon tightly around each hot dog so the edges of the bacon touch, but do not overlap. This will help the bacon cook evenly. For a long hot dog, you’ll need about 2 pieces of bacon. For a standard size hot dog you will probably only need one piece of bacon. For mini hot dogs, you will probably want to cut bacon in half so the bacon wraps around the cocktail dogs without overlapping.
- Secure ends of bacon with toothpicks.
AIR FRYER bacon wrapped hot dogs
Cooking air fryer bacon wrapped hot dogs couldn’t be any easier!
- Preheat air fryer to 400° F for 5 minutes.
- Spray air fryer basket with cooking spray if desired. Add bacon wrapped hotdogs in air fryer basket. Air fry bacon hot dogs for 8 minutes. Flip hot dogs (so the bacon cooks evenly) and cook for another 3-5 minutes until the bacon is fully cooked to your desired level of crispness.
OVEN BAKED bacon wrapped hotdogs
- Preheat oven to 400° F.
- Add bacon wrapped hotdogs to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake bacon hot dogs for ~13-16 minutes or until the bacon cooks evenly. (I don’t usually find it necessary to flip the hot dogs, but you can flip and cook them a few more minutes if the bacon isn’t cooked to your liking).
GRILL bacon wrapped hot dogs
- Preheat grill to high, about 400-425° F (I provide a range because exact grill temperatures can vary quite a bit).
- Spray grill with cooking spray or brush a little olive oil on grates so the hot dogs won’t still. Add bacon wrapped hot dogs to the grill and bake for 8-12 minutes, with the cover closed, rotating every 2-3 minutes or until bacon is cooked to desired crispness. Some hot dogs may finish cooking early, so remove them from the grill or away from the direct flame once done, while the others finish cooking.
Tips for finishing and serving bacon wrapped hotdogs
- Remove hot dogs from heat and let them cool 1-2 minutes or until they’re easy to touch with your fingers.
- Remove toothpicks before serving in hotdog buns with condiments. In the photo demonstration I used a delicious combination of cheddar cheese and bbq sauce.
- Serve and enjoy!

FAQs for making bacon hot dogs
Bacon wrapped hot dogs actually have a name all of their own—danger dogs! Don’t ask me how they earned this title. Danger dogs were made popular by street sellers in Mexico, but now they’re popular all over. In fact, the city of Los Angeles declared bacon wrapped hot dogs to be the official hot dog of LA.
Sure! Polish sausages work well in this recipe. Serve your bacon wrapped kielbasa with sauerkraut or a simple avocado ranch salad.
In the cooking demonstration seen here, I used BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese. Ketchup, mustard, grilled jalapenos or sautéed onions and peppers all make good toppings for a bacon-wrapped hot dog.
Serve your bacon-wrapped hot dogs with a cold pasta salad, baked beans, or Greek red potato salad. If you’re going for a happy hour theme, try these air fryer chicken wings.
I don’t find this to be a great slow cooker hot dog recipe because bacon needs high heat to get crispy. It’s not going to save time to slow cook the hot dogs, because the bacon will need time to cook in the oven so choose one of the other methods shared here for best results.
In my testing, they take just as long because the bacon on the outside needs to cook for the same period of time.

Meat thermometer recommendations
Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.
On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:
- Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
- ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.
It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.
How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.
While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!
