Detailed recipe steps
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil on the stove. On the counter, assemble a cold ice bath in a large bowl and set aside.
- Add broccoli to the pot when the water begins to boil. Boil for 1 – 2 minutes to quickly blanch broccoli. Then transfer it to the ice bath to stop it from cooking further. Strain cooled broccoli with a colander.
- Dice the onion into large chunks and dice the garlic clove. Set aside.
- Add all ingredients to a large bowl and combine to season broccoli all over for the grill.
- With a piece of foil, make a large area like a baking sheet tray with a rim on the edges. Dump seasoned broccoli and onions on the foil sheet.
- Preheat the grill too high. Our grill reached about 450-500 degrees F.
- Once the grill is hot, add broccoli and onions mixture with foil beneath it. Close the lid and grill broccoli and onions for 8-10 minutes. Open the lid, and toss around vegetables with tongs to get seasonings all over.
- Optional – if desired, move large broccoli florets directly on to grill grates to get a char. Choose ones that won’t fall through the grates. Leave the onions on the foil because they’re smaller.
- Close the grill for 1-2 minutes longer to finish.
- Remove grilled broccoli and onions, enjoy when cooled.

FAQs
Yes, you can most certainly grill broccoli. It’s super easy, is a great side dish to a grilled steak or partners well with grilled corn or grilled asparagus for example. Just season the broccoli and toss them in foil, a grill basket or directly on the grill grates to get the job done.
Grilling vegetables only takes a few minutes at a high grilling temperature (400 – 500 degrees F). In this grill broccoli recipe, it will only take you about 10 – 12 minutes in total to finish. You want the broccoli to be crisp and tender when done. Timing will fluctuate depending on the size of your broccoli florets.
You want to cut your broccoli into florets. I recommend leaving a little bit of the stem (1.5 inches) on them, especially if you are planning to grill the broccoli directly on the grill grates. If you cut them too small, they will fall through the grates.
You can season broccoli in a variety of ways. It really depends on your taste preference. If you want to keep it simple, like I did in this recipe, then just use all purpose seasoning and toss to coat before grilling them.
If you want to spice it up a bit, then you can add red pepper flakes and garlic to your seasoning.
For a refreshing finish, I recommend squeezing fresh lemon juice and grating parmesan cheese. In any case, you cannot go wrong with seasoning. Just choose something that you will enjoy.
You can grill broccoli with any type of vegetable that you’d like. I added onions in this broccoli on grill recipe. You could add cauliflower, or other veggies too. (Also see this smoked asparagus and smoked corn on the cob) You obviously will need a main dish with grilled broccoli, so I recommend a nice grilled ribeye!

Meat thermometer recommendations
Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.
On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:
- Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
- ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.
It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.
How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.
While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!
