My Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice review
I love having a bag of this rice in the freezer at all times. If I’m making something like tikki masala or butter chicken, it’s perfect to use instead of rice with a pita. If I want to make meatballs, substituting cauliflower rice instead of bread crumbs is a genius way to lighten them up at a really good price of only 2-3 dollars a bag.
Cauliflower rice doesn’t have much flavor itself, so I’m mostly using it in recipes with other ingredients to get extra nutrients onto the plates of my sous vide pulled pork loving husband and tater tot loving toddler.

Trader Joe’s Mexican cauliflower rice
The Mexican cauliflower rice from Trader Joe’s doesn’t appear to be available at all the stores all the time… making it a… collectors item? I dunno! But it’s delicious so pick it up if you see it.
Recipe serving ideas
Use the Mexican cauliflower rice from Trader Joe’s in these recipes:
- Tacos! I don’t know why I added an exclamation there, except for the fact that tacos with marinated flank steak and sous vide tri tip have been my go-to lately. Tacos are so delicious. So add this cauliflower rice as a substitute for regular rice to tacos to lighten ‘em up. Serve with tasty cotija cheese.
- Burritos. Make-ahead and freeze, then cook frozen air fryer burritos. They come out perfectly crisp in the air fry machine.
- DIY fajita bowls. Load ‘em up sous vide shrimp and sautéed onions and peppers, too.
How to cook cauliflower rice
You can use these directions for most of the cauliflower rice products from Trader Joe’s. They all need very few ingredients, unless you really want to spice things up.
Option 1: Cauliflower rice cooking instructions Trader Joe’s way
You can cook Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice in the microwave (for 1-2 minutes with 1 tbsp water for every cup of rice, stirring regularly).
The package gives you directions for the stove top. My version below is an amplified and more delicious way to cook it with some added flavor. (because cauliflower rice can get soggy and be a little bland otherwise)
Option 2: My way to make Trader Joe’s riced cauliflower taste better
Okay, so what I do is add a few seasonings here and there to make plain cauliflower rice taste better.
How to make Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice (my way)
I always think I can cook things better than store bought packages, and cauliflower rice is definitely one of those things.
Ingredients needed for flavorful cauliflower rice
- Butter (substitute olive oil)
- Garlic, minced
- Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice, frozen or fresh (1 bag)
- A little water
- Cilantro, fresh chopped
- Lime, fresh juice and zest
- Salt
Cooking instructions
- In a small frying pan, add butter and garlic. Saute on medium or medium-low, stirring constantly until the garlic becomes translucent and fragrant, but before it starts to burn. Remove from heat. At the same time, or right after, move on to the next step.
- Add Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice (from frozen or fresh) to a large pan on the stove on medium heat with 2 tbsp of water. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 3 minutes. Frozen cauliflower may take an additional 30 seconds. Check to see. You don’t want cauliflower rice that is mushy or soggy, it should be soft but still have texture and the water should cook out. Turn off the burner, but keep the pan on the stove to add in the cauliflower mixins.
- Add garlic butter, cilantro, lime juice and zest, and salt. Toss to combine and serve immediately.
Ingredients to add to cauliflower rice
- Corn
- Sous vide asparagus
- Feta cheese
- Bleu cheese
- Roasted broccoli
- Sautéed onions and peppers
- Sautéed mushrooms
- Roasted cherry tomatoes
