    • The wings – any chicken wings and/or flats (plus a little cooking spray).
    • Dry rub seasoning –  salt, pepper, cayenne, paprika, garlic powder.

    • Sauce – buffalo hot sauce, honey, water, cilantro.

How to Make Oven Baked Chicken Wings

In just a few minutes, you’ll season chicken wings and have them baking for 45 minutes to an hour.

Check out the steps to make them here.

Step 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Pat chicken wings dry with paper towels.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper and add an oven safe wire rack on top.

Spray rack with cooking spray. Set aside.

Top down shot of raw chicken wings and flats getting dry with paper towel underneath.

Step 2. Make the chicken wings spice rub. In a bowl, mix together the spice rub (salt and pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper).

Add baking powder and stir to combine.

In the wings cooking demonstration video, I added the dry rub spice blend in batches so the wings were thoroughly seasoned.

Step 3. Season wings with dry rub. Evenly coat the wings with the dry rub mixture.

Top down shot of seasoned chicken wings on a wire rack on a baking sheet.

Step 4. Bake wings in the oven. Add wings (skin side up) to the cooking spray coated baking rack (on top of the foil lined baking sheet).

Bake chicken wings in the oven 3 times, in 20 minute batches at 425°F.

In between batches, remove wings from the oven, spray them with cooking spray, then flip them with tongs and put them back in the oven to continue cooking until they reach 165°F.

The skin will be crispy and golden brown.

Stick a thermometer in the thickest wing to get the most accurate internal temperature reading. Wings are done at 165°F.

Step 5. Make the homemade sweet and hot wing sauce.

In a large bowl combine together the buffalo hot sauce, honey, water, and cilantro with a whisk.

Step 6. Coat oven baked wings with hot sauce. Add cooked chicken wings to the large bowl of wing sauce.

Use a spatula or tongs to completely coat the wings with hot sauce.

Step 7. Enjoy your crispy wings. Serve hot wings with extra sauce drizzled on top and a dipping sauce on the side.

Garnish with a sprinkle of carrots, green onion, and cilantro.

How to check chicken wing temperature when done

    FAQs for tasty wings

What’s the secret to crispy wings in the oven?

First, set up this recipe for success by patting them dry with paper towels before adding the seasoning. Second, the secret is all in the dry spice ingredients. The baking powder is going to help wings brown evenly and get the skin super crisp. Lastly, using a high oven temperature is key.

    Can you air fry wings?

Yes, if air frying, set the temperature to 400°F. Flip them every 5 minutes for about 25-30 minutes until they reach 165°F. You can also sous vide chicken wings.

How do you cook frozen wings?

Add on one more round of flipping and cooking them than this recipe calls for. So add on 15-20 minutes of cook time in the oven, and make sure a thermometer reads 165°F before considering them done.

What if the wings aren’t crispy?

If you follow this baked wings recipe step by step, they should turn out 110% crispy. If you cook wings from frozen and aren’t happy with the crispiness of the skin, then broil them on high for about 3-5 minutes until they have a crispy coating to your liking.

How are baked wings healthier than fried wings?

Most people would be surprised to know that you can get that crispy chicken wing texture without deep frying them. This version is healthier than restaurant style wings that are fried because you’re not drenching them in vegetable oil or butter. So way less saturated fat and calories!

    What to serve with wings?

Serve wings for a crowd with other make-ahead party favorites like pan fried potato chips, Caprese salad, BBQ pineapple meatballs, and bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers.

What sauces taste good with wings?

In addition to the honey buffalo wings sauce in this recipe, this jalapeno ranch is perfect for dipping. Also try traditional buffalo sauce, blue cheese dip, or ranch dressing.

How do you cut chicken wings?

Often, you can buy chicken wings cut into individual parts – the drumette, flat, and wing tip. You might see them referred to as wingettes and the drummettes. Other times, they are sold as one piece, other times you can get them already divided.

Most people serve “party wings” (that are already divided) without the tip for classic wing appetizers. If you buy wings that have the flat and drumette together, use a sharp chef’s knife to divide them for this recipe.

There’s no right or wrong way to do it, but cutting intact chicken wings into wings/flats before baking them will give you more surface area to season with the dry rub. So you’ll have more crispy wings in the end.

    Notes

    • To make oven baked wings crispy, pat wings dry with paper towels before seasoning.
    • Cooking wings from frozen? Add an additional round of flipping and cooking (plan for about 15-20 more minutes baking in the oven) until they are cooked to 165°F. Then broil on high if needed for 3-5 minutes.
    • Do you need vegetable oil? Not for this recipe for healthier baked chicken wings. The secret is in the baking powder which means less saturated fat and calories than deep frying.
    • Can you air fry wings? Yes, if air frying, set the temperature to 400°F. Flip them every 5 minutes for about 25-30 minutes until they reach 165°F.
    • Blue cheese dressing is a great dip to serve with wings. For a homemade dipping sauce, try this jalapeno ranch.

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Learn the secrets to smoking tasty Traeger recipes and making pizza at home. And cook amazing tri tip steak dinners.

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!
