Why you’ll love these air fryer / baked hot dog tortillas

    • Kids love them. And they’re easier to eat – a great alternative to hot dog buns. They dice up nicely to make them safe to eat for younger kids like my toddler, too.
    • Fast lunch recipe for kids or adults.
    • Change up the flavors with different condiments. Buh bye, ketchup. Salsa is a great dipping ingredient as is sour cream.
    • Cheesy goodness is baked right into the tortillas. It’s like a hot dog, grilled cheese, and quesadilla had a baby.
    • Easy appetizer for game day or parties.

    Ingredients for hot dog taquitos

You just need a handful of ingredients to make hot dog tortillas…

    • Flour tortillas
    • Cheddar cheese, shredded
    • Hot dogs
    • Olive oil
    • Taquitos toppings: sour cream, salsa, cilantro (optional)

This recipe came to fruition when I was overdue for a grocery shopping trip and wondering: “can I use flour tortillas instead of hot dog buns”? Thank goodness it worked out — and my family has a new favorite and fancy, almost gourmet hot dog recipe.

How to assemble the hot dog wrapped in tortilla

Now, I’ll show you how to cook a hot dog wrapped in flour tortilla… two ways (air fried and oven baked).

Infographic chart demonstrating how to assemble hot dog tortillas with cheese and flour tortillas.
    1. Preheat your air fryer / oven before prepping the tortilla hot dogs. Get toothpicks ready, about 1-2 per hot dog.
    2. Place flour tortillas on a cutting board. Sprinkle 1-2 tbsp of cheddar cheese in the center of the tortilla, leaving the outside 1” of the tortilla circle without cheese (to avoid cheese spillage).
    3. Place a hot dog on the edge of the flour tortilla circle, and roll it up tightly, like a rug. Repeat until all are rolled up and secure each hot dog wrapped in a tortilla with 1-2 toothpicks stuck in the center.
    4. Lightly brush each tortilla all over with olive oil.

How to make AIR FRYER hot dog tortillas

    1. Preheat air fryer to 400° for 5 minutes.
    2. Add hot dog taquitos to the air fryer basket so they don’t touch, and air fry them for 5-7 minutes until the tortilla shell is lightly toasted.

How to make BAKED tortilla wrapped hot dogs

    1. Preheat oven to 400°.
    2. Add tortilla hot dogs to a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake them for 10 minutes, then flip and bake for another 5-10 minutes until cooked through. The cheese will be completely melted and the tortilla shell will be lightly toasted.

Tips for serving tortilla hot dogs

    1. Let hot dogs wrapped in tortillas cool 1-2 minutes, then remove toothpicks.
    2. Add sour cream to a small plastic sandwich bag. Cut the tip off the sandwich bag (about ½” inch). Squeeze out the sour cream (I usually test it on a paper towel to make sure it comes out right first) on the tortillas in a squiggly line and sprinkle with fresh cilantro.
    3. Serve with a side of salsa for dipping.

FAQs for making hot dog tortillas

Can I use my favorite cheese in this recipe?

Absolutely! Customize this recipe and make it your own by substituting in your favorite cheeses for the cheddar cheese. Pepper jack cheese or a Mexican shredded cheese blend would be a good choice. Just make sure it’s a cheese that melts at a medium high heat.

What are good add-ons to cheesy tortilla hot dogs?

You can add any of your favorite burrito fixings to a cheesy tortilla hot dog— red pepper salsa, diced tomatoes, and sautéed onions and peppers are delicious choices.

What can I serve with cheesy tortilla hot dogs?

Serve these cheesy tortilla hot dogs with this make-ahead Mexican salad or some delicious french fries or air fryer frozen sweet potato tots or pan fried potato chips. For a dip in place of the sour cream, try this jalapeno ranch dressing. So good!

Can you make cheesy tortilla hot dogs ahead of time?

You definitely can! Assemble your cheesy tortilla hot dogs so they’re ready to go, then stick them in the refrigerator till you are ready to bake them.

    Notes

If you’re cooking a big batch of hot dog tortillas for a party or crowd, bake them in the oven since you can make more at a time. In my Phillips XXL air fryer, I was able to bake 3 taquitos at a time. Perfect for a dinner for my small family (hungry husband and food critic toddler).

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Learn the secrets to making pizza at home. And cook amazing tri tip steak dinners.

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!
