Why sautéing onions in the air fryer is genius

    • Very easy topping for tacos, turkey sandwiches, steaks, air fryer sausage sandwiches.
    • Serve it as a side dish.
    • They cook evenly without butter.
    • They are almost impossible to burn.
    • If you’re new to making sautéed onions in the air fryer see my recipe at the bottom of this post and I’ll walk you through it.

    Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make air fried onions.

Infographic with ingredients for air fryer onions
    • Onions – I suggest using yellow, white or walla walla, sliced to 1” thick half moons
    • Olive oil
    • Garlic powder
    • Salt
    • To top, if desired: cilantro and marinated red pepper

How to make air fryer onions

Now I’ll walk you through how to use the air fryer for this dish.

Infographic steps to air frying onions
    1. Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees F for 5 minutes.
    2. Season onions. Add sliced onions to a large bowl and toss with olive oil, garlic powder and salt to combine. Coat onions evenly with oil and seasonings.
    3. Air fry onions. Spray air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray if desired. Add onions to air fryer basket (in a flat layer, it’s okay if they overlap). Air fry onions for 15-30 minutes, flipping with a spatula or tongs every 5 minutes, until cooked to your desired level of softness and caramelized brown color. (See recipe notes on why cooking times vary depending on air frying one onion, or more.)
    4. Serve onions. Transfer to a serving platter and let them cool a few minutes until they are cool enough to enjoy. Serve with a sprinkle of fresh chopped cilantro and marinated red pepper.

    FAQs

What kind of onion can I cook in the air fryer?

You can saute any type of onion in the air fryer — red, white, or yellow. My favorite is sweet yellow or walla walla onion…. Mmm.

What type of oil do I use to air fry onions?

You can use any type of oil you prefer, I usually just use an extra virgin olive oil. A mild flavored oil like sunflower or canola will allow the onion flavor to shine, while stronger tasting oils like sesame will add a unique flavor profile.

Can I make onions in the air fryer without oil?

It can be a little confusing because you probably know using an air fryer is healthier than deep frying foods and you may not be expecting to use any oil in the air fryer at all. This recipe does require oil, though, which helps soften the raw onion, instead of it burning in the air fryer. Just like in my caramelized onions recipe.

How can I use air fryer onions?

These air fryer onions are delicious with steak, chicken, or fish, and make a yummy topping for burger patties, stuffed in chicken al pastor tacos, and even on homemade pizza! Honestly, there aren’t very many foods that aren’t improved by a topping of these tasty onions.

    Notes

I like to make air fryer onions in a large batch, which is why I recommend making 3 of them at a time. However, because there are so many onions in the air fryer basket at the same time, this results in a longer air fry time.

If you cook 1-2 onions instead of 3, the cooking time will be about 10-15 minutes less.

It all depends on the size of your air fryer and how thick the layer of onions is in it. Cooking fewer onions often results in browner, crispier edges since there’s more air circulating the food.

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Learn the secrets to smoking tasty Traeger recipes and making pizza at home. And cook amazing tri tip steak dinners.

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

    Instagram me @sipbitego & chef hubs @handmodelpatrick

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!
