Today I’m sharing how many burgers you can make from one pound of meat, and how to divide a LB of beef into individual burgers.
How many burgers are in a pound of beef
Here are your options for portioning out burger meat…
- 2 burgers = ½ LB each
- 3 burgers = ⅓ LB each
- 4 burgers = ¼ LB each
- 6-8 burgers = sliders (use mini Hawaiian or other small buns)
Aim for 3-4 burgers because…
While half-pound burgers are an option for a heartier meal, quarter-pound patties (4 burgers in a LB) or one-third patties (3 burgers in a LB) are my recommendation for optimal burger enjoyment.
Making 3-4 burgers per pack of beef will help stretch your burger meat further, but still produce burgers large enough to fit perfectly on a standard hamburger bun.
5+ burgers per a pound of beef are simply just sliders and will look silly on your buns, hun!
How to divide one pound of meat into burgers
For a perfectly balanced burger-to-bun ratio, start by dividing one pound of ground beef into four equal patties, each a quarter pound. Use a knife to create an X-shaped cut, ensuring even portions.
Season each patty generously with garlic salt and pepper, approximately ¼ tsp of garlic salt and an ⅛ tsp of pepper per patty, ensuring flavors are evenly distributed.
Shape the seasoned meat into patties, pressing them thin enough to fit standard burger buns. Optionally, sprinkle additional garlic salt and pepper on top for extra flavor.
Cooking tips
Utilize a spatula or heavy-duty burger press while cooking to achieve the desired thickness.

Meat thermometer recommendations
Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.
On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:
- Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
- ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.
It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.
How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever before cooking them.
While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!
