Where is the Santurce area of San Juan?
Santurce is an area about 10 minutes outside of Old San Juan.
It’s a revitalized neighborhood that is world-known for colorful outdoor murals that wrap around many of the buildings in the neighborhood.
Why is there street art in Santurce?
The art is what brought this area back.
Artists started a movement that’s been spreading like crazy ever since, to liven up this area of Puerto Rico again.
One of my favorite things about a walking tour around Santurce is that it’s typical to admire the work of an artist creating in real-time.
On a recent trip to Puerto Rico my tour group saw a talented young artist painting during the day.
If you’re a creative person or love seeing local art when you travel, the Santurce is where you want to visit to take in the street art movement that has taken over Puerto Rico.

What is San Juan street art like?
Known as “the capital of art in the Caribbean” – this artsy area of the San Juan is a neighborhood filled with colorful murals rivaled by bigger US cities…
Like Miami’s Wynwood Arts District and Chicago’s West Loop.
While artists come from all over to leave their mark on San Juan…
This neighborhood was started by a movement to “heal” the area – both the spirits of the people in it, and the appearance of the buildings themselves.
This art district now draws in tourists particularly for Caribbean festivals including:
- Los Muros Hablan
- Santurce es Ley
In addition to touring the Santurce murals by foot, you can visit Puerto Rican art galleries and museums in this area, too.
Book a Santurce art walk tour
I recommend booking a tour guide to explain the significance of the murals so you get the most out of your trip.
On a recent visit, I took a double Casa Bacardi tour, followed by a walking tour of Santurce art.
