Here are 5 things to love about visiting Luquillo Beach in Puerto Rico…
But first off…
What beaches are in Luquillo Puerto Rico?
- Playa Fortuna Beach (pictured in this post)
- Balneario La Monserrate
- Playa La Pared
- Playa Azul
Besides the picturesque views with palm trees and calm waters…
(which are great for strolling and swimming in)
There are some other things to know about this beachy area…
1. Food near Luquillo Beach is fresh
Food and bar options line the beach.
You’ll have about 60 food kiosks to check out, so visit near lunch or dinner to take in the local cuisine.
One restaurant within walking distance to Luquillo Beach, El Kiosko, has tanks of fresh lobsters out front.
On a recent visit hosted by Discover Puerto Rico, I saw diners cheerfully choosing their lobster dinner by hand.
I stopped in a bar for a quick cocktail – a passion fruit mojito at Kiosko 2 – which I had a couple times during this particular visit to the island.
Food from the Menu at La Parilla (El Kiosko #2)
My tour group stopped at El Kiosko 2, but that particular day there was a mixup with the food and so by the time I decided to skip lunch and go to the beach…
I was able to see one Puerto Rican food platter come out…
This place serves seafood and various Puerto Rican and Caribbean fusion food.
I grabbed a drink at the very small barely-any-standing-room bar, too.

2. It’s easy to access Luquillo Beach
How do you get to Luquillo Beach from San Juan?
This peaceful beach in Puerto Rico is about 45 minutes east of San Juan. It’s on the way to Fajardo.
Transportation tips from San Juan to Luquillo Beach
You can book an Uber, but remember when traveling to more remote areas outside of San Juan, you might have to wait longer to get an Uber back.
One option is to visit Luquillo Beach on an excursion to the rainforest or elsewhere nearby.
On a recent trip I paired a stop at this beautiful beach with a trip to the El Yunque Puerto Rico rainforest.

First I stopped at a rainforest with my tour group on this hosted trip, then we went to Luquillo Beach afterwards…

What ocean is it on?
Puerto Rico is pretty unique in that it’s an island where two different oceans meet.
This beach is north, it’s facing the Atlantic Ocean.
3. You can play water sports at Luquillo Beach
Book something like a Jet Ski or Flyboarding Experience.

4. There are calm waves
This is definitely more of a sleepy beach than a surfing beach.
At least on the day I visited.
It’s great for cooling off a bit, enjoying the sand beneath a shady tree, and taking some photos.
5. It’s a great beach in Puerto Rico for kids, too
If you’re visiting the area with kids, this is a pretty calm beach to visit based on my summer visit.
You don’t have to walk far from the shore to reach the ocean, and since there is some shade, you can find a comfortable area to stay a while and play in the sand.
I found the people walking by to be friendly, and it wasn’t crowded during the weekdays.
There are no lifeguards at this beach, so just note that!
