What is it?
El Yunque National Forest is a popular tourist destination in Puerto Rico.
It’s a beautiful, lush forest that I experienced on an excursion hosted by Discover Puerto Rico.
Why it’s special
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.
It’s a great vacation destination in Puerto Rico if you love adventure and want to experience land and water in one day.
El Yunque Rainforest Tour with Beach Combo
On the tour I went on, you start out by taking a hike on the easy-going trail….
Then take a dip in the water, and you might get wet from the rainfall, too…
Book the tour I went on to visit the El Yunque Rainforest with a Beach Tour on Viator.
What you’ll see there…
- Lush vegetation
- Waterfalls
- Trails
- Diverse wildlife
I also noticed a building called “Junglequi Zip Line Park” which might be something to look into there, too.
Location in Luquillo Mountains
Located in Luquillo Mountains, you’ll find the only only tropical rainforest located in the northeastern part of Puerto Rico.
The mountains in this area of the island peak at the summit of El Toro.
How to get there
I recommend a tour guide which provides a bus from your hotel, like the one I arranged from the Caribe Hilton.
Know before you go to El Yunque Rainforest
Book a tour
Personally, I would recommend a tour guide to share details on all the history, hiking trails, wildlife and endangered species in el Yunque.

The USDA Forest Service uses fire-based practices
So you might want to look into the timing of your trip with these events.
This means there are “regular prescribed burns”
Final thoughts on this Puerto Rico excursion
If you go – enjoy your time at this popular tourist destination in Puerto Rico.
When I signed up for the tour I was a bit nervous, but I’m so happy to have visited.
I really think there are plenty of activities to enjoy in nature here, and that many people of all ages would enjoy this trip, if they’re up for a little adventure!
