Today you’ll learn how to cook Trader Joe’s Thai vegetable gyoza in a pan. I posted a video cooking them on Instagram and although it’s pretty straightforward, a few people had questions so I’ve turned it into a cooking demonstration. Enjoy!

People are often surprised to hear that as a food blogger, I cook with frozen foods, too. As a busy toddler mom who works from home, I love shortcuts – especially for lunch. The Thai vegetable gyoza Trader Joe’s sells has quickly become one of my WFH lunch staples. They’re an item on my Trader Joe’s must haves grocery shopping list.

    Ingredients to make it

You only need a handful of ingredients to make this dish.

    • A little olive oil to pan fry gyoza
    • 6 Trader Joe’s Thai Vegetable Gyoza, frozen
    • Water to steam the gyoza
    • Teriyaki sauce and green onion for serving

How to make TJ’s frozen gyoza

My steps to making Trader Joe’s gyoza vary slightly from the package. Here’s how I make and serve them.

Step 1. Heat a small or medium sized pan on the stove to medium-high. Add olive oil, and once oil is hot, add Trader Joe’s Thai Vegetable Gyoza. My preference is to add the frozen gyoza to the pan with the flat side down.

Step 2. Saute for about 1 minute until gyoza dough is golden brown, then flip dumplings with tongs to brown the other 2 sides for a total of 2-3 minutes of total pan searing time.

Suggestion: use tongs to gently press down gyoza while they cook on the sides that are not flat, so they brown more evenly.

Step 3. Once all sides of the Trader Joe’s gyoza brown, turn the burner heat down to low. Add water and cover to allow the gyoza to simmer and steam. After 2-3 minutes, almost all of the water will have evaporated. Remove the lid and allow the rest of the water to evaporate.

Step 4. Add teriyaki sauce to a bowl and serve with cooked gyoza, topped with green onion. Enjoy!

    FAQs for making them

What are the Trader Joe’s Thai Vegetable Gyoza cooking instructions?

On the package, the directions for pan frying them read: “Preheat 1-2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet or saute pan. Place frozen Gyoza flat side down in a pan and saute on medium heat for 4 minutes or until skins turn lightly brown. Reduce heat to medium low. Carefully add 3-4 tablespoons of water to pan and cover immediately. Steam gyoza until water has evaporated and gyoza begins to brown, about 5-6 minutes. Serve immediately with your favorite soy dipping sauce.”

What’s in Trader Joe’s Thai vegetable gyoza?

The main ingredients are the gyoza wrapper and cabbage carrot chive filling. There is also white radish, green onion, onion, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, wheat flour, wheat starch, corn flour, soybean oil, sesame oil, sugar, salt, pepper, vegetable powder, and seasonings.

What type of teriyaki sauce do you recommend for gyozas?

In this demonstration and Trader Joe’s gyoza review, I used Trader Joe’s Soyaki Teriyaki sauce as the dipping sauce. I love it because the sesame seeds in the teriyaki sauce are the perfect touch. One bottle of this Trader Joe’s teriyaki sauce lasts quite a few bags of frozen gyoza and Trader Joe’s mini potstickers.

How do you air fry Trader Joe’s gyozas?

Air frying Trader Joe’s gyozas, potstickers, and dumplings is super easy. Cook them from frozen, without thawing first by placing them in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray with cooking oil to coat the dumplings and air fry at 380°F (193°C) for 7 minutes. Then flip and continue air frying for 2-5 minutes, until they are brown and crispy.

I beg to differ, especially if you’re steaming them after. I mean is that in the rule book for dumplings? No but this is creative cooking buddy 🙂 it’s tasty, try it!
