Why toasting buns on the griddle is a good idea
Everyone likes toasted buns on their burgers, right?
I’m more of a fan of just toasting the INSIDE of the buns, which you can do perfectly right on your outdoor griddle flattop, while making your burgers.

Ingredients
All you need are hamburger buns!
You could also use a little butter, which would be tasty…
But usually I cook hamburger buns on the flattop in a place where I cooked something else, so they can pick up flavor…
For example, they’ll pick up a little avocado oil or butter if I griddle buns in the spot that was just used to griddle onions.
So I don’t find it necessary to add butter or oil to griddled burger buns most of the time.

Do you need a griddle dome to toast buns?
While it’s totally optional, you’ll get more of a steam effect if you cover the hamburger buns with a smash burger dome while they cook.

How to toast hamburger buns on the griddle
Now I’ll walk you through how simple it is…
- Preheat the Traeger Flatrock, Blackstone, or whatever griddle grill burner you have, to low heat (~300 degrees F).
- Grease the griddle, if you want. I don’t always add butter, sometimes I just put the burger buns right on the griddle, because I usually cook the buns in an area of the griddle that was cooking something else and already had some avocado oil or butter (and a ton of flavor, like griddled onions and peppers). But you can add butter, and to do this, add a small pat and spread it around on the griddle.
- Use a dome, if you want. To do this, add dome over burger buns while they cook on the griddle. It will help steam the buns.
- Toast buns on the griddle until done to your liking. I prefer to only griddle the inside of hamburger buns, not the outside, but you can flip ‘em and griddle the outside a bit, too. They should be done within just a few minutes.

Meat thermometer recommendations
Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.
On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:
- Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
- ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.
It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.
How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.
While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!
