How to toast bread on a pan
Now we’ll go step by step on how to grill bread in a pan.
- Set out a grill pan, cast iron skillet, or frying pan on the stove to preheat. If working with a long grill pan, then stick pan over two burners. Turn on all burners under the pan you’re using to medium or medium-high heat.
- Brush bread with olive oil on both sides. Mix together garlic powder and salt. Sprinkle salt and garlic powder on bread to season it.
- Add bread slices to the pan once it’s hot. Every 1-2 minutes, use tongs to flip toasts to the other side of the bread as they turn golden brown and grill marks form. If some are turning brown faster than others, move them to the outside of the pan where they’ll get less heat. Continue flipping as desired, exact minutes per side will vary.
- Remove toasted bread from grill pan as they turn brown to your liking.
FAQs for making grill pan toast
Any baguette or french bread loaf makes a good toast bread. You can also slice larger shaped bread for toast – for example, I like to make triangle wedges out of sourdough bread. You can even use sandwich bread if that’s what you have on hand.
Once you see for yourself how to make toast bread with frying pans, you’ll find reasons to use it all the time. I add it to platters with basil hummus, serve it alongside pasta dishes topped with basil spinach pesto or homemade pasta sauce, or serve it with restaurant style appetizers like this chilled zucchini soup. Leftovers are great with some peanut butter.
You can, but don’t have to use stale bread like you would for a crouton recipe or stuffing recipe. Fresh bread works just as well, do you don’t have to put the bread out for days just to make this recipe.

Meat thermometer recommendations
Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.
On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:
- Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
- ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.
It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.
How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.
While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!
