Why smoking brats on the Traeger is so good…

    • Easy!
    • 1 minute prep work.
    • FAST cook time.
    • This brats smoker recipe is a great way to feed a crowd tasty smoked foods.

How long to smoke brats at 250 degrees F?

At 225 degrees F, brats smoke for about an hour.

Smoking Queso appetizer with smoked brats

Smoke brats at the same temperature, 250 degrees F, along with smoked queso for a delicious pairing. Both the queso and bratwurst smoke together in about 1 hour.

And they both stay pretty warm for about 30 minutes, which is why they make a great party appetizer on the smoker.

Smoking brats at 225 degrees F instead

You can cook brats even slower and longer (about 2 hours) if you set the smoker to 225 degrees F, but I rarely do this unless I’m cooking a side dish that low as well.

    Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make Traeger smoked brats.

    • Bratwurst / beer brats — that’s it!

    How to smoke brats

When it comes to smoked meats, this beer brats recipe is one of the easiest to make…

Smoking beer brats on the pellet grill with queso dip appetizer

    Detailed recipe steps

    1. Preheat Traeger Grills or Pitt Boss or whatever pellet grill you’re using to 250 degrees F.
    2. Prep bratwurst for smoking by poking holes in the skin with a knife or fork.
    3. Smoke brats for 45 – 60 minutes. The cooked brats done temp is 160 degrees F, as measured with an internal read thermometer.
    4. Finish smoked brats by making sandwiches or serving them on toothpicks diced up as a smoker appetizer. Or, use them for smoked nachos or queso. So many ideas, check them out on Sip Bite Go.

    FAQs

    How long to smoke brats?

Depending on the temperature that you are smoking brats, it should take 45 minutes up to about an hour. If smoking brats at 225 degrees F, you should plan on it taking ~2 hrs to reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

    Can you smoke brats?

Yes, you can! Smoker brats are a great way to flavor them with smoky deliciousness! Also, smoking at a lower temperature will keep them juicy vs grilling brats at a higher temperature.

    What temp to smoke brats?

You can smoke brats anywhere from 180 degrees F – 275 degrees F. I do not recommend smoking brats at a higher temperature because you will end up with less smoky flavor and less juice inside. It’s worth noting that altering the temperature will adjust the cooking time.

When are smoked brats fully cooked?

Smoked brats are fully cooked when they have reached 160 degrees F as an internal temperature.

What condiments do you serve with your brats?

If you are serving a smoked brat in a roll then you can top it with ketchup, yellow mustard, relish, sauerkraut, or caramelized onions for example. These condiments also work as dipping sauces on the side if you are not serving smoked brats in rolls. Smoking cream cheese on the side is an easy pairing for this dish.

What pellets should you use for smoked brats?

I recommend that you use either hickory pellets, mesquite, oak or apple wood chips. Or you can just use a mixed-blend of pellets – it’s a pretty versatile meat to flavor with smoke.

What type of brats should I buy?

Really any type of brats will work for smoking brats. Whatever your local market carries will work for this recipe. In this Sip Bite Go recipe example, we made Johnsonville smoked brats.JOHNSONVILLE brats package

    Meat thermometer recommendations

Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.

On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:

    1. Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
    2. ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.

It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.

How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.

While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!

    Are you a foodie, too?

Hey home chefs, hope that answers all your questions about smoking bratwurst. In the future, I’ll share how to grill this special sausage to make a charcoal brats recipe.

And a bacon wrapped brats idea, and a smoked bratwurst recipe that’s made while smoking them in a beer bath. SO GOOD!!

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Learn the secrets to smoking tasty Traeger recipes and making pizza at home. And cook amazing tri tip steak dinners.

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

    Instagram me @sipbitego & chef hubs @handmodelpatrick

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!

See my book on Amazon: The Home Chef’s Sous Vide Cookbook.
