Crock Pot Sweet Potatoes Mashed in the Slow Cooker

Why are these mashed sweet potatoes in the crock pot so good?

    • It’s beautiful! A lovely, vibrant side dish for a nice dinner or holiday.
    • So delicious!! My meat-loving husband legit licks the bowl when I make them!
    • This is a healthier version than candied sweet potatoes made in the slow cooker, which usually uses quite a bit of sweet ingredients. I’ve kept these “cleaner” for a lighter sweet potato side dish.
    • Slow cooking sweet potatoes this way saves oven space when you’re cooking a holiday meal.
    • Includes a video for beginners (scroll to bottom of page).

    Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make crockpot sweet potatoes healthier and lighter. Feel free to improvise with your favorite seasonings.

Infographic with ingredients for crock pot mashed sweet potatoes

Main mashed / pureed sweet potato ingredients

    • Sweet potatoes, cut in 2” cubes
    • Butter
    • Brown sugar
    • Lemon juice and soy sauce (or add 1 tsp more lemon juice)
    • Seasonings: garlic powder, chipotle powder (or cumin), salt, pepper
    • A little chicken broth (added at the end, if needed – see recipe)

*NOTE – I made this a healthier mashed sweet potato recipe by using no heavy cream, no maple syrup (although it would be so good drizzled on top, haha!), and using spices in place of copious amounts of brown sugar.

    Garnish ideas (optional)

    • Olive oil
    • Sour cream
    • Pepitas (dry roasted pumpkin seeds are so good with creamy sweet potatoes!)
    • A little fresh cilantro
    • Maple syrup

    How to dice sweet potatoes

To help them cook evenly, you’ll prep the sweet potatoes by dicing them into 2” chunks.

Now I’ll walk you through it…

infographic demonstrating how to slow cook sweet potatoes in a crock pot with step by step photos
    1. Set up a crock pot machine / slow cooker and preheat it to low, medium, or high based on your preferred for cooking time. The mashed sweet potatoes in the Sip Bite Go demonstration cooked on low for 5-6 hours.
    2. Add all mashed potato ingredients to the crock pot, but do not add chicken broth at this time. Cover and cook, stirring 1-2 times while slow cooking.
    3. Once sweet potatoes are very soft and easy to pierce with a fork, transfer to a mixing bowl if desired and use an immersion blender to puree sweet potatoes. (I sometimes puree sweet potatoes in the crock pot, but you have to be careful not to press down too hard and ruin the enamel if you do it in there). If your mashed sweet potatoes are thicker than you’d like, blend in chicken broth, 1 tbsp at a time.
    4. Garnish sweet potatoes as desired with suggestions such as a little olive oil, sour cream pepitas, fresh cilantro, and/or maple syrup.

    FAQs

What goes with slow cooked sweet potatoes?

These mashed potatoes can be enjoyed as a stand-alone side dish or served under a main entree, like a slow cooker sweet potato puree.

Pair this sweet potato recipe with proteins like pan grilled chicken, t bone in the oven, or tri tip. They’d also be so good with smoked pulled pork, really, you can use them with just about anything that goes well with baked potatoes!

What size crock pot do you use for mashed sweet potatoes?

I suggest you use a smaller 6 qt crockpot if you have it. One that will easily “fill up” to the middle or top with the ingredients. A really large crock pot can throw off slow cooker recipe cook times if there aren’t many ingredients in it. If you’re using a large one, just check it regularly because it might cook faster.

Do you need an immersion blender?

No, but I recommend you get an immersion blender to have on hand for next time, and so you can make tasty, healthy recipes like my chilled zucchini soup. Instead, you can use a potato masher or the back of a fork to mash them up. They’ll be a bit more chunky, less puree style, but still delicious!

    Meat thermometer recommendations

Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.

On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:

    1. Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
    2. ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.

It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.

How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.

While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!

    Are you a foodie, too?

Hey home chefs, hope that answers all your questions about slow cooker mashed sweet potatoes.

There are other sweet potato crock pot recipes to dabble with like soups and casseroles. I also love to instant pot them, and bake sweet potatoes with oven roasted beets. So, I’ll be posting more soon! For now, check out how to use sweet potatoes in this recipe for farro salad with roasted vegetables.

    Equipment

    • small crock pot
    • blonde shun chef’s knife
    • glass mixing bowls
    • lemon juicer
    • immersion blender

    Ingredients

Main crock pot mashed sweet potato ingredients

    • 3 medium sweet potatoes cut in 2” cubes
    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 1 tbsp brown sugar
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • 1 tsp soy sauce or add 1 tsp more lemon juice
    • ½ tsp garlic powder
    • ⅛ tsp chipotle powder optional, substitute cumin
    • ½ tsp salt
    • ¼ tsp pepper black
    • 2 tbsp chicken broth only if needed (see instruction #2)

Garnish ideas (optional, use what speaks to you)

    • 1 tsp olive oil extra virgin, high quality
    • ½ tbsp sour cream
    • 1 tbsp pepitas dry roasted
    • 1 tsp cilantro fresh chopped
    • 2 tbsp maple syrup

    Instructions

    • Set up a crock pot machine / slow cooker and preheat it to low, medium, or high based on your preferred for cooking time. The mashed sweet potatoes in the Sip Bite Go demonstration cooked on low for 5-6 hours.
NOTE ON THE CROCK POT SIZE: I suggest you use a smaller 6 qt crockpot if you have one. Why? I like when the volume of the food will easily “fill up” to at least the middle of the slow cooker machine, or even better, the top. I find that a really large crock pot can throw off slow cooker recipe cook times if there aren’t many ingredients in it. If you’re using a large one, just check it regularly.
    • Add all mashed potato ingredients to the crock pot, but do not add chicken broth at this time. Cover and cook, stirring 1-2 times while slow cooking.
    • Once sweet potatoes are very soft and easy to pierce with a fork, transfer to a mixing bowl if desired and use an immersion blender to puree sweet potatoes. (I sometimes puree sweet potatoes in the crock pot, but you have to be careful not to press down too hard and ruin the enamel if you do it in there). If your mashed sweet potatoes are thicker than you’d like, blend in chicken broth, 1 tbsp at a time. NO IMMERSION BLENDER? Use a potato masher or back of a fork to mash them up. They’ll be a little chunkier, but still tasty!
    • Garnish mashed crock pot sweet potatoes as desired with suggestions such as a little olive oil, sour cream pepitas, fresh cilantro, and/or maple syrup.

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Learn the secrets to smoking tasty Traeger recipes and making pizza at home. And cook amazing tri tip steak dinners.

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

    Instagram me @sipbitego & chef hubs @handmodelpatrick

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!
