Quick look at this BBQ beef rib back recipe

    1. Prep and season beef back ribs with dry rub.
    2. Bake beef ribs for about 3 hours at 275 degrees F, until tender.
    3. Brush beef ribs with BBQ sauce and finish baking 15 minutes more.
    4. Rest and enjoy.

    Detailed recipe steps

    1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F.
    2. Season beef back ribs all over, first by massaging in olive oil. Then sprinkle with the BBQ rub seasonings and massage them in, too.
    3. Bake beef back ribs in the oven at a temperature of 275 degrees F uncovered, meat side down (bone side up) for 3 to 3.5 hours a thermometer measures an internal temperature of 202 – 210 degrees F.
    4. Remove beef back ribs from the oven, but leave the oven on so you can cook the ribs for the final step with BBQ sauce. (They’re probably falling off the bone tender at this point. You can probably eat them now if they’re done, but take the recipe a step further with more flavor by continuing.)
    5. Remove baked beef back ribs from the tray for a moment, and discard foil with beef juice on it. Put a new piece of foil in the rimmed baking sheet and transfer the beef ribs back on it, this time with meat side up.
    6. Brush meaty parts with bbq sauce and bake for 15 more minutes.
    7. Rest and enjoy.

Ways to make smoked beef back ribs on the Traeger

While you’re waiting on my smoker recipes for beef back ribs for my Traeger recipe catalog, here are ideas for enjoying this cut with the smoked foods method…

    1. Follow this my 321 method for beef back ribs smoked at 225 degrees F. It will combine wrapping the ribs with brushing them with BBQ sauce at different times.
    2. Smoke beef back ribs at 275 degrees for 3 hrs. When you increase the temperature to 275, they cook faster. Wrap them in foil until they reach an internal temp of 202 degrees F (~90 mins)
    3. Smoke at 225 degrees F, with no wrap until they’re done (about 3 hours until they reach a 205 – 210 internal temp). Then wrap ‘em in butcher paper or foil during the resting period of about 15 minutes to 30 minutes..

Soon I’ll share a recipe video for beef back ribs smoked on the pellet grill, too.

    FAQs

    What are beef back ribs?

Beef back ribs are the small amount of meat that is left on the rib bones after the ribeye and rib roast cuts are made. Beef back ribs come from the dorsal area of the cow behind the shoulders. The ones in this Sip Bite Go recipe tutorial were already cut in pieces. But you might find them in a strip of beef back ribs which might require you to remove the membrane and clean them up a bit more.  Costco Store Bought Package Of Raw Beef Back Ribs Individually

What to serve with beef back ribs?

Beef back ribs are great paired with smoked mashed potatoes, smoked mac n’ cheese or oven roasted vegetables or small bowls of rice to name a few sides.

What temperature should beef back ribs be cooked to?

You should bake, smoke, or grill your beef back ribs to an internal temperature of 202 – 210 degrees F.

How can you cook beef back ribs?

You can cook beef back ribs in a variety of ways. In my recipe for this post, I baked them in the oven for the entire cooking process. Another popular method is to smoke beef back ribs in a smoker until done. Sous vide beef is another tender-cooking option. For any of these slow methods, you can finish beef back ribs on the grill to get a char if you desire.

What’s the difference between beef back ribs vs short ribs?

Beef back ribs and short ribs are cut from two different areas of the cow. Short ribs are actually found below where beef back ribs are cut. Short ribs come from the rib cage of the cow, whereas beef back ribs are cut from the higher back of the cow. See how to sous vide short ribs with a tasty peppercorn sauce.

How long should it take beef back ribs to be cooked?

For this oven beef back ribs recipe, it should take you about 3-4 hours baking time. Again, always measure doneness by the internal temperature.

    Meat thermometer recommendations

Every home chef needs a reliable meat thermometer to cook food perfectly.

On Sip Bite Go, you’ll often see me using:

    1. Meater thermometer – a fancy wireless thermometer that connects to a phone app – gifted to me from a Traeger partnership.
    2. ThermoPro digital thermometer – which has a wire that connects the thermometer to a display box outside the oven/grill.

It’s like being psychic! The great thing about either of the thermometers above is that I don’t have to take the food out of the oven to know the temperature.

How to use ‘em… What I do is stick the digital thermometer in steak, pork, chicken, whatever… Then put the food in the oven, on the smoker, or grill.

While the meat cooks, it reads the temperature so I know exactly what temp meat is as it’s cooking. Without having to take it out and check. It’s really difficult to overcook food when you know exactly what temp it is inside!

    Are you a foodie, too?

Hey home chefs, hope that answers all your questions about how to cook beef back ribs in the oven for an indoor BBQ dinner.

    Hey, I’m Jenna Passaro.

I develop easy recipes that can transform your kitchen into a restaurant – and you into a true home chef.

    Where to start?

Learn the secrets to smoking tasty Traeger recipes and making pizza at home. And cook amazing tri tip steak dinners.

Or, fall in love with something new to cook with your air fryer, pellet smoker, BBQ grill, sous vide cooker, and more…

You’ll notice, I kind of geek out over new cooking trends and tools!

    Instagram me @sipbitego & chef hubs @handmodelpatrick

My story. Growing up, I didn’t learn to cook.

(I was actually banned from cooking for years)

And then in my 20’s I didn’t have to cook because my job as an event planner involved a lot of travel and it was easier to eat out. At the time, I was 100% positive that restaurant food would always taste better than cooking at home, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Until I fell in love with a chef. He would come over and cook me delicious meals right in my own kitchen. My mind was blown.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to figure out easy ways to make restaurant style food at home and share it here on Sip Bite Go.

Love to eat out and travel? I can totally relate. See my guide on where to eat in Portland, OR.

Never in a million years did I imagine I’d ditch the 9-5 lifestyle in my late 20’s, move across the country on a whim, start a new life, start a food blog, and write a book.

    But here I am!

See my book on Amazon: The Home Chef’s Sous Vide Cookbook.
